Violence on the rise at Exeter Prison

There are concerns over safety and a rise in violence at Exeter prison following an annual report of the jail.

Exeter Prison's Independent Monitoring Board have said in their report that safety at the site has been compromised by a number of pressures on the prison, particularly low staff numbers and increased drug use by prisoners.

Despite raising concerns that prison staff numbers were low in their last report they say that it continues to be a problem at Exeter.

The board has also noted an increase in violence in the last year  - both to staff and by prisoner on prisoner -and  there were also 4 deaths believed to be self-inflicted.

The Board concludes that staffing pressures and the availability of drugs have all been contributing factors.
