Only 12 people have done it
Two Devon based doctors are now preparing for a challenge of a lifetime.
Charlie Fleury and Adam Baker are hoping to raise £20,000 for two charities by swimming a kilometre in freezing waters of the Atlantic circle and Antarctic in just a swimming costume, cap, and goggles.
After 18 months of training to combat cold water shock and hypothermia, they plan to tackle it in September and November.
The pair will push their bodies harder than ever before, requiring significant physiological adaptation to be able to even survive the extreme conditions where water temperatures are likely to be between -1 and 4 degrees Celsius.
This married couple have previously rowed across the Atlantic and circumnavigated Great Britain within a three-month span in 2021-22, raising over £40,000 for charity.
They were also awarded a Guinness World Record for participating in the longest static cycling class lasting 31 hours and 34 minutes in November 2023, which raised £35,741 for Weston Hospicecare.
