Torbay high on list of Devon's deprived areas

New figures have been released for the first time since 2015

Torbay is home to many of the most deprived areas in Devon.

New government figures, released for the first time since 2015, show that Stonehouse in Plymouth was the most deprived in the county, along with parts of Torquay and Paignton.

The ten most deprived areas in Devon, according to the The Index of Multiple Deprivation released by the Official for National Statistics, are those around the following roads:

1. Clarence Place in Stonehouse, Plymouth
2. Church Street in Paignton
3. Stoke Road in Stonehouse, Plymouth
4. Queen Street in Devonport
5. St Lukes Road in Torquay
6. Tor Church Road in Torquay
7. Potters Hill in Torquay
8. Pendennis Road in Hele, Torquay
9. Furse Park in Plymouth
10. North Prospect Road in Plymouth

Factors measured for the results include indicators such as income, crime, employment and education.

Nationally, the seaside village of Jaywick in Essex has labelled the most deprived neighbourhood in England, for a third time.

Most of the other areas in the top ten are in Blackpool.

Councils with the highest proportion of deprived neighbourhoods are all in northern England. They are Middlesbrough, Knowsley, Hull, Liverpool and Manchester.
