Torbay timepiece tower repairs

Baroque clock to be strengthened

The clock tower at the headquarters of Torbay Council is in need of repairs.

A survey found defects in the structure and plans have now been approved to strengthen it.

The tower stands above Torquay Town Hall, a listed building fronting Castle Circus off Union Street. The work will involve fitting an internal steel frame to the top level of the tower and repairs to sections of concrete.

The building was constructed in two phases in 1906 and 1910, in the Edwardian Baroque style. The new steel structure will be hidden by the tower and the work is similar to a scheme carried out on another section in 2003.

The council’s planning team has now given listed building consent for the repairs to go ahead.
