They were in difficulty in stormy conditions

Three kitesurfers have been rescued close to the Exe estuary after getting in difficulty in stormy weather.

The coastguard was called around noon on Wednesday after a report that they were struggling against the tide.

Battling windy conditions and choppy seas, Exmouth's inshore lifeboat took less than 10 minutes from launch to reaching the casualties who were tied to a mooring having been unable to get back to the beach.

They were taken on board the lifeboat to the shore at Belshers Slipway. None were injured.

The RNLI crew returned to the scene to recover the kitesurfers' equipment to avoid it becoming a hazard to other water users.
