Red 'danger to life' warning in place

Tens of thousands of households across Devon and Cornwall are currently without power, with some unlikely to have it restored until this evening.

Residents across the South West are being urged to "stay indoors if you can" as Storm Darragh sweeps through the region.

A red "danger to life" weather warning is in place for parts of North Devon until 2100 on Saturday, while the rest of the county is under an amber warning for strong winds.

Many attractions across Devon are closed today (Saturday), with some also remaining shut on Sunday.

The National Trust has closed all its estates in Devon and Cornwall in line with their weather protocols. RHS Rosemoor in Devon is also closed, and the RHS Glow event has been cancelled.

Local Christmas events around Devon have also been called off or closed, including the Exeter and Plymouth Christmas market.

Rail passengers are being advised to postpone their journeys this weekend.

There are no services running between Plymouth and Penzance or between Barnstaple and Okehampton.

Plymouth Argyle’s Championship match at Home Park has been postponed due to the weather.

A club statement said: “the decision was made early to avoid lengthy travel to Plymouth in difficult conditions and in the best interests of supporter safety. We would never put the safety of fans, staff, or players at risk.”

The statement continued, “There is a real danger of flying debris and potential falling trees, which could cause danger to life, with damage to buildings and homes also a real possibility.”
