More for a taxi in Exeter than Mid Devon

But Exeter hasn't put prices up for five years

It costs more to travel two miles in Exeter than it does in Crediton, Honiton or Tiverton.

Figures published by the magazine Private Hire & Taxi Monthly have revealed price difference across Devon's local authorities, which set the standard fares for what are called 'hackney carriages' (ie. cabs that aren't private hire vehicles). West Devon didn't provide data, but everywhere else did, showing Torridge will cost you two pence more than Exeter for a two mile journey.

The cheapest area, and the only council area in Devon below the national average of £5.83, is in Mid Devon, where the fare is £5.70, although the last increase in the region was in 2010.

The difference between Exeter and Mid Devon is about 16 per cent. But councils review fares at different times. East Devon is discussing fare increases next week, which could be bad news if you're a passenger, or good news if you drive a licensed cab.

The two-mile fare prices are:

• Torridge – £6.62 – last increased in 2017
• Exeter – £6.60 – last increased in 2013
• North Devon – £6.55 – last increased in 2016
• Torbay – £6.39 – last increased in 2016
• East Devon – £6.30 – last increased in 2012
• Teignbridge – £6.30 – last increased in 2013
• Plymouth – £6.00 – last increased in 2017
• South Hams – £6.00 – last increased in 2017
• Mid Devon – £5.70 – last increased in 2010

Nationwide, the most expensive fares are in London, costing £7.80, with the cheapest fare in South Kesteven, costing £3.50.
