Royal Clarence partially collapses

More than 24-hours on, firefighters are still battling to save historic buildings

The Cathedral Green fire is still ongoing, as at 8.15 on Saturday morning.

Late last night, everyone on the site retreated to a safe distance when it appeared that buildings were likely to collapse.

At 5.15am the fire service reported that the front fascia of the Royal Clarence Hotel now has.

Photos appear to show the blaze is threatening the gap between the Clarence and the Ship Inn in Martin's Lane; an Elizabethan hostelry that's hosted Sir Francis Drake. This is Exeter's most historic area, with parts of some buildings dating from medieval times, but rebuilt and added to over the years.

People are being asked to consider their travel plans today. Large parts of the city centre are still closed to traffic, although many businesses are still trading.
