Resignations spark Exeter city council elections

Whatever happens, Labour will still have an overall city council majority

Two seats on Exeter City Council will be contested next week, at the same time as people across the city and most of Devon cast their votes in Devon County Council elections

The two vacant seats on the city council have been created by resignations. Labour councillor Naima Allcock has stood down in the Mincinglake and Whipton ward, while fellow Labour member Joshua Ellis-Jones has resigned in Topsham.

It means voters in those parts of the city will be marking their boxes in two polls on Thursday 1 May.

Labour had 23 city councillors before the two resignations, with the other groups holding a total of 16 seats between them. It means that whatever happens in the city council by-election, Labour will still hold an overall majority.

Those standing for election in the two vacant city council seats are:

Mincinglake and Whipton: AYRES Martin, Green Party Candidate; BALDWIN Ian Anthony, The Conservative Party Candidate; BLACK Paula, Labour and Co-operative Party; MARTIN Angela, Independent; PAYNE Tony, Reform UK; RICHARDS Paul Stephen, Liberal Democrat.

Topsham: COOKSON James Elie, Labour Party; HILL Edward Clive Andrew, Reform UK; SPARKES Keith Andrew, The Conservative Party Candidate; THOMAS Philip Alexander, Liberal Democrat; WOTTON Greg, Green Party Candidate.

Across the whole of Exeter there are elections for the city’s nine representatives on the county council.
