Re-route Dawlish railway line, says engineering expert

With speculation continuing over the future of the Dawlish railway line, a top engineer says in his opinion, it should be re-routed inland.

Network Rail is currently working to get the track repaired and reopened - trains are expected to start running again in mid-March.

Dr Tim Fox is the Head of Energy and Environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

He says although it's possible to improve the sea defences at Dawlish, the best long-term solution would be to re-route the track inland - as extreme weather conditions become increasingly frequent.
