Rail Strikes Could Deter Visitors

There's concern that planned rail strikes later this month will hit the visitor trade hard here in Devon.

Local tourism organisations claim train services are vital for visitors heading to the Westcoutry.

Services affected by the latest round of strikes could include trains between London and Exeter and other local routes.

The Chief executive of Visit Devon, Malcolm Bell, thinks it will create even more congestion on local roads, and also deter some people from coming at all.

The RMT union is due to meet First Great Western next week for further talks, in its dispute over the role of guards on the new fleet of trains due to start running in the region in three years.

If they fail to make an agreement, union members will walk out on the 23rd, and again on the August Bank Holiday Monday.
