But it doesn't beat Mongolia

An influential magazine has named Plymouth as one of the most underrated cities in the world.

Time Out has revealed 14 travel destinations that people should visit.

Mongolia tops the list, with only Lake Bakalar in Mexico; Cuenca in Ecuador; Srebrenik in Bosnia and Herzegovina; Cabo Rojo in Puerto Rico and  Gippsland, Australia beating Britain's Ocean City.

Making his nomination, Time Out's UK editor Huw Oliver wrote: "If the Devon city of Plymouth were any smaller, it’d be considered a jewel of a day-trip destination. If it were any bigger, it simply couldn’t be overlooked. Perhaps because of its middling size, it’s slipped under the radar, and that’s pretty unfair, if you ask us.

"Like art? The Box is a brilliant, recently opened gallery that celebrates local artists. Like architecture? You’ll be dazzled by the newly done-up Market Hall, which also has its own ‘immersive art dome’.

"Like swimming? Few pools are more spectacular than the Tinside Lido. Like gin? England’s oldest distillery is smack bang in the historic city centre. Book a room at the Bistrot Pierre B&B, in the revamped Royal William Yard, and you’ve lined up pretty much the perfect weekend away."

And like Radio? Radio Exe Plymouth is the city's radio station. What finer reason to visit?

Neil Walker presents his daily show from Plymouth. Among his favourite things are "A cooked breakfast looking out to sea at Jennycliffe; crabbing at Oreston Quay with our son; a curry at Crownhill Village and a rousing walk around Devil's Point. And only one of these is a lie."
