Plans for foreign Chief Constables 'nonsense'

The organisation representing rank and file police in Devon and Cornwall has hit out at proposals which could see foreign police chiefs running British forces

The Home Secretary Theresa May announced a series of possible changes to the police recruitment system this week.

She put forward the idea that police chiefs from overseas could come to the UK and run police forces here - but the chairman of the local police federation says that idea is 'nonsense'.

Nigel Rabbitts says Chief Constables have to be from the community they serve, and must also be familiar with the British culture.

The proposals also include allowing recruits to skip their two years on the beat as constables - which the police federation isn't happy about either.
