Serial child-killer Robert Black will not be charged over the disappearance and murder of East Devon schoolgirl Genette Tate back in 1978.
Police had handed a new file of evidence against him to the Crown Prosecution Service, even though he died in prison in January.
The CPS has now told Devon and Cornwall Police that it won't charge dead suspects - and that this is a relatively new policy.
Police will visit Genette's father John to talk him through their new evidence - but he's said he's 'devastated' that the 40-year investigation is effectively closed.
