Man pleads guilty to killing university lecturer

Devon and Cornwall Police have referred themselves to the watchdog

Devon and Cornwall Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after a univeristy lecturer was murdered in Plymouth.

53-year-old Paul Butler, of Stangray Avenue in the city, appeared in court via video link from prison, where he admitted killing Claire Chick who was 48.

He also pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and is due to be sentenced on 25 April.

Ms Chick was found seriously injured in West Hoe Road shortly before 21:00 on 22 January. She was taken to hospital, but died in the early hours of the next morning.

A referral's been made to the police watchdog afer officers made contact with Ms Chick on numerous occasions since 2023.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Our investigation is considering the actions and decisions taken by Devon and Cornwall Police and examining whether relevant policies and procedures were followed."
