Last-gasp Torquay United win again on the road

Chesham United vs Torquay United

Chesham United 2 Torquay United 3

Brad Ash stooped to turn the ball home in the sixth minute of added time to win the match for Torquay at Chesham.

The Gulls had to come from behind to win a game they seemed destined to let slip away in a performance which still contained far too many mistakes for comfort.

But Paul Wotton’s side put together a thrilling finale against 10-man Chesham, finally making their man advantage pay, and Ash’s late winner sent a sizeable Yellow Army contingent home happy.

Wotton made four changes from the side which beat promotion favourites Dorking on Saturday, with Finn Tonks, Cody Cooke and Jadyn Crosbie starting, along with former Chesham midfielder Roddy Collins.

But there was little to choose between the sides in a cagey first half with few chances. The home side broke the deadlock after 36 minutes, with Joe Garner firing in a low shot after a cross into the box had been only half cleared.

Torquay levelled the scores in dramatic fashion in the last minute of the half. A drive from Tonks was heading for the top corner when Chesham defender Jack Cawley got up acrobatically to tip it away. Cawley was sent off for his efforts, and Cooke scored the penalty to get Torquay on the scoresheet.

But instead of imposing themselves against the depleted home side after the break, Torquay found themselves drawn into a scrappy encounter.

And it was Chesham who got the lead back in the 65th minute when Garner struck another low shot beyond the reach of Gulls keeper James Hamon.

Torquay looked as if they were going to be on the wrong end of a shock result until Dan Hayfield pulled them level again after 70 minutes, driving a powerful shot across home keeper Ben Goode into the far corner of the net.

And things got even better for the Gulls deep into injury time when Ash got in bravely at the near post to guide a Dean Moxey cross into Goode’s net.
