    Service received over 30 calls

Devon’s fire service received more than 30 calls about reports of a fire at Huccaby Tor on Dartmoor yesterday [31 May 2021].

The fire initially started in a camper van but started to spread to the gorse land due to high winds, at times it had a front of half a mile with bellows of smoke seen from all around.

Crews from Yelverton were sent to the original incident, and whilst en route, several more calls were received to say that the moorland was alight. 8 crews from different stations spent much of the evening tackling the blaze but managed to get it under control by the early hours of today [1 June 2021].

One fire engine from Bere Alston re-visited the site this morning to check the fire was fully extinguished.

Crews have confirmed that the fire is now out - It’s not known how it started.
