The Devon and Somerset fire service is to stop mobilising crews in response to automatic fire alarms in business premises during the daytime - unless it's been confirmed that there IS a fire.
Fire chiefs say the automatic fire alert systems used by businesses generate a lot of false alarms.
This means crews - including on-call retained firefighters - are being called out unnecessarily, making them unavailable for genuine emergencies ..... and imposing extra costs on the fire service.
Businesses already have a legal duty to identify, maintain and manage fire safety procedures.
The fire service is advising companies to review their fire risk assessments and management plans - as it will stop attending automatic alarm call-outs between 8am and 6pm from November 1st.
