Proposals for saving five and a half million pounds have been announced by the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service, in response to a bigger-than-expected cut in Government funding.
The plans include changing some crewing arrangements from whole-time to on-call... more prevention work..... reducing call-outs to automatic fire alarms.... and the use of smaller fire appliances which are 70 thousand pounds cheaper than traditional ones.
Savings are also being made in management costs and back-office staff, through natural turnover NOT job cuts.
