Exeter's Station Road to re-open as planned

Work on Station road is due to complete on time and the road will re-open on 8th June as planned.

The Environment Agency’s work to protect 3,200 homes and businesses in Exeter reaches an important milestone this week. 

On both sides of the river large, steel gates have been installed and will sit behind the footpaths housed in brick clad walls with the exposed gate face clad in timber. When a flood is expected the gates will be closed completing the flood defences and protecting the properties behind them. 

The new flood gates on Station Road and the adjacent flood defence walls are integral to the Exeter Flood defence scheme. When complete the scheme will provide flood protection to 3200 homes and businesses. 

There are still some works to do on Station Road that can be undertaken without the need for a road closure. These works include masonry cladding of concrete walls and relocating the zebra crossing so that it lines up with the path along the edge of the river.  

The Environment Agency and Network Rail have co-ordinated work such that Network Rail have undertaken essential maintenance work on their level crossing during this time to avoid the need for a separate closure at some future date.

Richard Cox, the scheme’s project manager said: “We’d like to thank commuters and others for their patience while we have undertaken these essential works. We recognise that it has been inconvenient and at times noisy. The flood defence works on the east side of the river both upstream and downstream of Station Road continue until October but do not involve any closure of the road.
