Exeter waste recycling centre to be rebuilt

The previous facility was destroyed in a major fire last year

More than one hundred firefighters from across Devon were called to Devon Contract Waste at Marsh Barton on March 1, 2017, after the fire broke out at the recycling centre.

The fire ripped through the building in 17 minutes, and it has since been cleared away and scrapped after being destroyed. Plans to reinstate and rebuild the Enviro-Hub have been approved by Devon County Council officers under delegated powers.

Approving the plans, the decision notice said: “The proposal overall achieves a number of benefits in terms of energy reduction through recycling, reducing miles to carry waste, using energy efficient heating sources, and maximising energy efficiency of the building through materials and design.

“The site is a former waste recycling centre which now requires total re-construction in order to resume its operation. The building which is intended to be replaced was approved in 2011 and it is proposed to construct a replacement one to an almost identical floor plan area, which is only 4m2 larger, but to an improved design."
