Exeter Spartans top of National legaue three!
Exeter Spartans hosted Gloucester Kings in their first home match in their new division, National League three - the first time in more than seven years that an Exeter team has entered a national division.
Quite a crowd turned up to Exeter College's sports complex to witness the highest level of basketball around the Exeter area.
The atmosphere around the court was ecstatic and the support from the bench elated spectators. In a tight game, neither team gained more than a 10-point advantage.
For the uninitiated, shots from inside the ‘D’ are worth two points; attempts from outside, three points; free throws are worth a single point.
After an enthralling first quarter, Exeter Spartans led narrowly. The Spartans got the first basket of the match within 30 seconds in period of high speed and tempo.
The first quarter ended Exeter Spartans 18, Gloucester Kings 16.
In the second quarter Gloucester showed Exeter how rough this league could be. They accumulated five fouls, showing their strengths on and off the court. The battles were fierce, but the entertainment was second to none.
The advantage for Exeter elongated as they reached half time, Exeter 36, Gloucester 31.
A strong third quarter by both teams meant four points were in it going into the final ten minutes of the game.
Exeter supporters around the court were joining in with chants to boost their side on. The support helped, as Spartans spurred ahead in the final minutes, outscoring Gloucester by 10 points, winning their second match in the National League.
Exeter Spartans went on to win 64-54 in a very entertaining game of basketball. After two matches, they are currently unbeaten.
