Dramatic rise in complaints about councillors

The number of complaints made about councillors in East Devon more than doubled in the last financial year.

The district council's Standards Committee meeting this morning will hear that a total of 72 were received in the 12 months ending in March, compared to 31 the previous year.

It cost the council nearly 65 thousand pounds to handle the complaints and 21 were were referred on to the ombudsman - double the national average.

Most of them alleged disrespectful behaviour or claimed a councillor - town, parish or district - had brought their office or their council into disrepute.
