Double attempted murder in Newton Abbot

Man and woman seriously injured

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault on two people in Newton Abbot.

Police were called at 12.50am on Sunday following after a man in his fifties and woman in her forties were seriously injured near The White Hart public house in East Street.

They were treated by ambulance before being taken to Torbay Hospital, although their injuries are neither life-changing or life-threatening.

The suspect left the scene following the assault but was tracked down to a nearby address.

Police say a man in his fifties was taken into custody.

Detective inspector Nicky Baker said: “We would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and we believe the suspect and the victims are known to each other.

“We know that the incident was witnessed by a number of people and we would ask anyone who has not yet spoken with police to please get in touch.

“We would particularly like to speak with anyone who may have captured the incident on their mobile phones, vehicle dashcam, or on CCTV.
