Council tax benefit changes 'protect low income households'

A series of measures to minimise the impact of Government changes to council tax benefits will be discussed by Teignbridge councillors today.

They're designed to protect people on low incomes who could be hit hard by the welfare reforms.

The proposals being put forward for Teignbridge include removing the 10 per cent council tax discount on second homes, reducing the discounts given to people with unoccupied properties, and and adding a 50 per cent premium to long-term empty homes.
Just over 2,000 households in the district will be affected. and the council tax benefits for pensioners will NOT be changed.
