Campervan rescue from flooding

Dawlish stream water rose quickly

The occupant of a campervan that became stranded in a Dawlish ford after heavy rainfall caused a stream to flood rapidly has been rescued, along with their dog, by the fire service.

Another passenger in the van was able to escape and call 999 from Lower Dawlish Water just before 9am on Monday. Fire crews advised the other occupant to stay in the vehicle until they arrived.

They donned water safety suits and were able to safely enter the water at a more shallow and calm area directly behind the vehicle, allowing them to rescue of both the person and dog, uninjured, and help them to safety.

Crews then made the vehicle safe.
