Argyle head to Wembley

They're in Papa Johns Trophy final

Plymouth Argyle are through to the final of the Papa Johns Trophy, which will be played at Wembley on the first weekend in April.

Argyle beat Cheltenham on 3-2 on penalties on Tuesday evening at Home Park after drawing 1-all after 90 minutes.

Ryan Hardie, Sam Cosgrove and Macauley Gillesphey put Argyle penalties away, whilst keeper Callum Burton kept out a critical kick from the visitors.

It's unclear how the authorities will look on a happy pitch invasion at the end, as hundreds of Plymouth fans took to the playing surface. But it was all good-natured and exuberant.

It is the third time Plymouth have beaten Cheltenham this season, having done the double in League One matches. Argyle are currently top of the league, with promotion to the Championship looking more secure, whilst Cheltenham are languishing at the lower end of the table.

Wembley trips are a rarity for Plymouth fans. Exeter City have famously played under the famous arch three times in League Two play-offs, and came away disappointed each time. Their progress into League One this season was automatic.

Arygle's last two visits to Wembley have also been play-offs. They beat Darlington 1-0 in 1996, but lost 2-0mto AFC Wimbledon in 2016.

Now fans will be booking their trip to London, where they will face either Accrington Stanley or Bolton Wanderers, who play they semi-final tonight.
