Disappointing draw after strong performance
Sheffield Wednesday scored a last-minute equaliser to deny a well deserved Exeter City win.
On the back of a one- all away draw at Morecombe a week before, the same result hit City again in front of a sell-out crowd at St James Park. This means the Grecians have sold out their last three home games of the year.
In the opening 10 minutes, Sheffield Wednesday looked dangerous, piling on pressure. Looking stronger of the two side, they were winning most of the battles. But this didn’t last long as Exeter became quickly more dominant.
Despite having less of the ball early on, Exeter City had two major chances but couldn’t capitalize on them. Exeter was looking much better.
Grecians’ goalkeeper Jamal Blackman thwarted a Sheffield shot from within six-yards. A goal-saving opportunity, which sent both sides into half-time level at nil-nil.
Although the first half was goalless it was end to end and painted a narrative for a thrilling match.
The home side started the second half strong as the pendulum swung the way of Exeter. And City defender Jake caprice scored a screamer from 25-yards out and opened up the scoring to put Exeter ahead.
The game was electric following the goal as the home-side were dominating and playing much better football.
An encouraging attack from Jay Stansfield should have doubled Exeter’s lead, but the Sheffield goalkeeper redeemed his earlier mistake and made a good save.
Sheffield Wednesday offered hardly any attacking threat throughout the second half and in the second minute of stoppage time Sheffield Wednesday forward, Callum Patterson slotted the ball into the bottom corner and scored a last play equaliser to the delight of the travelling fans.
This was a game Exeter City should have won because they were assertive throughout but a lapse of concentration in the final minutes prevented Exeter City from climbing into the top 10. Instead, the Grecians fell to 12th in the League One standings.
