Local results from this weekend

It’s been another busy weekend for our Devon sides. 

In the Championship, Plymouth Argyle travelled to Swansea City and beat them one, nil courtesy of Plymouth striker Morgan Whittaker, who scored against his former club. It was their first away win of the season- coming at their 15th attempt. This victory keeps them in 15th in the league and eight points safe from the relegation zone. 

The Pilgrims are back in cup action straight away. They host fellow Championship side Leeds United in the FA Cup fourth-round replay on Tuesday 6 February. The winner will play either Chelsea or Aston Villa away in the fifth round. 

In League One, Exeter City failed to extend their winning streak to three matches after losing one-nil at home against Bristol Rovers. It was the first time former City Manager and player Matt Taylor returned to St James Park since leaving Exeter in October 2022. Although Exeter had spells of dominance throughout the match, they couldn’t find an equaliser. This loss drops Exeter to 17th in the table. 

It was another weekend to forget if you are a Torquay United fan. They were thrashed four, nil at home against St Albans City. Angry fans left long before the final whistle in what was Torquay United’s worst afternoon of the season. This defeat means Torquay drop out of the play-off places.

The Exeter Chiefs women lost 22,12 against Bristol Bears in the Premiership and sit in third place in the league. In the national league one, Plymouth Albion fell short away at Leicester Lions. They lost 19,12 in the rescheduled fixture and are third in the league. 

There are no Premiership matches in rugby for seven weeks to avoid clashing with the six nations, but some Exeter Chiefs players have been involved for their country. Exeter flanker Ethan Roots, who made his England debut, was named player of the match following his indefatigable display in their 27, 24 victory against Italy in Rome.

Henry Slade was back in the starting 15 after being dropped from the World Cup squad, and Exeter’s Immanuel Feyi-Waboso earned his first England cap. 

Chiefs lock Dafydd Jenkins, the second-youngest Welsh captain, led his country against Scotland. Wales lost by one point after being 27 down.
