City temporary manager wants job full-time

Kevin Nicholson already fans' favourite

Exeter City interim manager Kevin Nicholson says he would like the job full-time. 

Speaking ahead of his fourth match in charge, a home game against Oxford, Nicholson, 42, tried to avoid the question about his future. 

But during prolonged questioning at his weekly press conference, he admitted “Yes I would be interested and keen to do it longer-term.”

Keen to emphasise that his players are focused solely on the upcoming match, he believes it is a distraction for everybody to focus on the vacancy.

However, the fans seem to be behind him. During the away game at Charlton, City supporters created a chant about the interim manager. He was “delighted… and it was special to hear it.” 

This is following two wins in three matches and becoming EFL League One’s manager of the week in his first week after taking over from Matt Taylor.

He believes he is well qualified. Nicholson used to be manager for Torquay United and was the under 18s’ coach for Exeter City before becoming interim manager, after Matt Taylor’s departure to Championship side Rotherham United. 

Midfielder Harry Kite, “is pretty much back.” says Nicholson, “and we are almost a couple weeks from full strength.” 

He continued: “The last couple days have been about making sure [the players] are as fresh as possible. The lads are as prepared as they could. They are a great team with good players.”
