City dominant in 3-1 win

Match report: good night for Grecians

Exeter City welcomed Wycombe Wanderers in their fourth game of the League One campaign, and just the second at St James Park, and were hoping to get back on track after a 2-1 loss to Cambridge at the weekend.

Matt Taylor made one change to that line-up, bringing in Matt Jay for Sam Nombe.

The game started evenly poised as both sides had their chances but were also good in defence.

Exeter gradually started to look more dominating, piling pressure on the Wycombe players, which led to errors in City’s favour.

The Grecians drew first blood as a corner was crossed with Diabate being on the receiving end, but his header hits the post. Fortunately Harry Kite was perfectly placed for the rebound, slotting the first goal for Exeter

Wycombe seemed to switch on after the goal as they started to take over.

Exeter did well to hold out, and it didn’t take long to get back their stride as defender Alex Hartdridge played a long ball to Matt Jay who passed in turn to Jack Sparkes. His ball into the box was cleared.

Big Bank fans in particular were loving what they were seeing and it didn’t take Exeter to long to double their lead as Hartdridge played a long ball to Matt Jay who squares it to Archie Collins. Another goal. Two-nil. City on the up, and all before half-time.

But before the end of the half, Wycombe attacker Mcclearly was one-on-one with Hartdridge. His shot proved an easy claim for City keeper Jamal Blackman.

If that was only a slight scare, a bigger one came only five minutes after the restart, when Wycombe registered their first goal as a long ball was headed down by Mcclearly to Wheeler who brought the score to 2-1.

While the outfield players had fun, goalkeeper Jamal Blackman showed how to dribble past players as he danced past two Wycombe attackers.

Both sides played more steadily, fearful of conceding, but Archie Collins’ outside-of-the-box effort was close to extending the Grecians’ lead.

Exeter won a corner after a Jack Sparkes free kick was saved and following that a ball was crossed in by Brown which had Timothee Dieng on the receiving end of it to head City into a 3-1 lead.

Exeter continued to move the ball well with Sparkes and Harry Kite in particularly doing great plays between themselves, but nothing else came from it.

After seven minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle saw Exter gain all three points and move back to fifth in the table. With Plymouth Argyle whipped at home by Charlton Athletic 5-1, Exeter fans left. jubilant.

Final score: Exeter 3 Wycombe 1
