Devon sport - weekend review

only one of the five games for Devon ended as a win

It wasn’t a good day for sport in Devon. One team won out of five. Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City, the Chiefs and Torquay United lost their matches. Meanwhile, Plymouth Albion managed to as they cruised past Cinderford 24-3 in the Rugby National League 1.

Plymouth Argyle kicked off Devon as they had the early fixture against ex-Premier League side Leeds. This was the fourth time these two teams have met throughout this season. Plymouth have failed to capitalise on all occasions. It only took the visitors ten minutes to break the deadlock after Leeds’ Wilfried Ggnotto’s left-footed shot reached the back of the net. The game was then thwarted for Plymouth as an hour later Leeds doubled the lead and saw the visitors take all three points.

Exeter City also failed to capitalise on their League One match, as their visit to Lincoln was a short, sad stay. It took the hosts over an hour to take the lead. This turned out to be the only goal of the game. Exeter suffered back-to-back defeats for the Grecians after their little win streak to push them from relegation contenders to mid-table.  Full-time Lincoln one, Exeter City nil.

Torquay United continued their poor form as their travel to Braintree ended with them taking no points in their quest to return to the National League. Torquay had an early shock as Alfie Payne was sent off 26 minutes later. But couldn't capitalise on the early setback;  the hosts then took the lead in the 55th minute as Braintree’s Tom Blackwell took the lead. Things got worse for the visitors as Torquay also had a man sent off 20 minutes after the goal, Torquay’s Tom Lapsille evened out the teams.

Moving onto rugby, Exeter Chiefs saw their late comeback cut short as Gloucester moved onto the Premiership Rugby Cup final. Gloucester saw themselves 17-0 up at the halfway mark. But with ten minutes to go in the game, the Chiefs managed to get the score to 17-14. But the three points were too much for the Chiefs to get as Gloucester managed to hold on to the lead as the final whistle embargoed the Chiefs’ final hopes.

Plymouth Albion were the only team to come out of today with a result. They welcomed Cinderford and they left the game with ease as the final score was 24-3. This saw Albion return to winning ways as they had lost their past three games in a row which was the first time they had done so. This result helps them to keep up with third place Birmingham Moseley.
