Empty storage unit could be converted to reduce social isolation

A multi-use community centre for young people complete with a performance area could be created in Ernesettle Green, Plymouth.

Applicant Adam Price wants to convert a 160 sqaure metre storage unit into an open plan space specifically for organisations which provide services for youngsters.

He is seeking pre-planning advice from the city council.

The unit at 9 Ernesettle Green already has permission to be turned into a two-bed flat, but is currently vacant.

New plans include a kitchen area for preparing meals and providing food education, a flexible meeting room for one -to-one support and a stage/performance area.

Sound-proofing would prevent noise being heard by residents in the flats above, said the applicant.

An indoor courtyard area would minimise the risk of young people congregating outside.

“Ernesettle has seen the closure of many other community spaces in the recent past and the establishment of this new centre would provide a much needed additional space where young people can safely access the support they need to help them flourish, reduce social isolation, build skills and improve mental wellbeing,” said Mr Price in his statement.
