Covid hits contractors at St Sidwell's Point
Construction of Exeter's new leisure centre has come to a halt after two people working on the site contracted covid-19.
St. Sidwell's Point is currently scheduled to open next summer, but the contractor, Kier, has confirmed that work isn't currently able to continue.
The multi-million pound building has been taking shape throughout the year. On Tuesday, a statement from Kier says: "“We can confirm two of our employees working on St Sidwell’s Point have tested positive for covid-19 and we have acted proactively and in accordance with Government guidance to prevent further potential spread.
“This has included carrying out a deep clean of the site and through the NHS covid-19 track and trace app a number of colleagues have also been advised to self-isolate. As a result, we have temporarily paused works at the site, and we will liaise with Exeter City Council and our valued supply chain partners as we look to remobilise.
“The health, safety and wellbeing of our employees is of paramount importance and once the site is operational again, we will continue to work in-line with Government guidelines and to the Site Operating Procedures.”
Exeter City Council, which will own and operate St Sidwell's Point, isn't commenting on the delay.
