Police funding U-turn puts end to council tax consultation

A proposal to raise council tax in Devon and Cornwall by about 25 pounds a year - to offset Government cuts to police funding - has been shelved. .

It follows the Home office's decision not to move forward yet with a review of the funding system, after the discovery that flawed data had been used in some of the calculations.

The error was pointed out by the office of Devon and Cornwall's police and crime commissioner - which began a consultation on putting up council tax yesterday.

The aim was to raise 15 million pounds to offset the impact of a huge cut in Government funding, which would have resulted from the review.
