Nineteen seats are being contested
A month ahead of polling day, the full list of prospective councillors wanting to serve on Plymouth City Council has been released, with all parties hoping to bring an end to a period of turmoil both in and out of the council house.
Nineteen of the 57 seats are being contested; one third of the council.
The Conservatives are currently in control, with a 23-seat minority administration after a series of resignations and suspensions from the party.
Labour, who have 25 seats, gained a seat from the Tories in a January by-election; as did the Greens, who now have three councillors.
The Independent Alliance hopes to gain seats from Labour and the Tories. Four of their five councillors are up for election on Thursday 4 May.
Plymouth Labour says it aims to ‘Build A Better Plymouth’, with a promise to bring stability to the council after what Labour leader and Ham councillor Tudor Evans called “a carnival of chaos.”
The Conservatives will be fighting on their track record, including boosting investment into the region including the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport.
Plymouth Greens want to build on successes in last year’s local elections and a January by-election which currently gives them three councillors.
The Independent Alliance says current party politics in the city is not working and is urging what it calls the “silent majority” of voters to support them.
