National rollout expected

Five schools in Plymouth have been selected to trial new free breakfast clubs.

St Joseph’s School, Devonport, St Peter’s School, Whitleigh, Pilgrim Primary, Stonehouse, Widey Court at Crownhill and Pennycross Primary will all be involved in a government pilot which will help shape the scheme when it is rolled out to all primary schools later this year.

Breakfast clubs was a key manifesto pledge by Labour, estimated to save parents up to £450 a year per child which Plymouth councillor Sally Cresswell (Lab, Stoke), cabinet member for education, skills and apprenticeships, said would help with the cost of living crisis.

Schools had to apply before last Christmas to be considered for the scheme

She told the council’s cabinet this week children would get breakfast and care for the first half-hour of the school day so parents could go to work, training or education.

“This is an opportunity to shape what the national breakfast club strategy will be and how well it will be delivered when it comes out in full,” she said. “It is a practical policy encouraging children to achieve and thrive.

“A nutritious breakfast at the breakfast club will allow pupils to have a positive interaction with other children, a gentle and calm start to the day and a feeling of belonging that is so important.”
