Plan to stop rail line flooding revealed

Plans have been unveiled for work to prevent the railway line at Cowley Bridge on the outskirts of Exeter, from flooding.

There have been four weeks of disruption in the last two years and the main line has been closed.

But now Network Rail say they'll be removing three weirs in the area to lower the water level in the river Exe under Stafford Bridge. Pynes, Exwick and Cowley weirs will be removed to ensure the water falls by a metre.

The work is expected to cost millions of pounds and start at the end of next year.
