Opinion mixed on vaccine take-up

VIDEO: In Exmouth, some will, some won't have jab

Some will. Some won't. Opinion is mixed on whether people will take the new covid vaccines when the call comes. The majority of people suggest they will roll up their sleeve, but some are worried about the speed with which vaccines have been produced and approved. At the beginning of the pandemic, experts warned that it could take many years, and may not come at all; many are now celebrating the success of scientists around the world in giving hope to an end to the crisis.

Michelle Wray from Roseland Care Home in Exmouth says: "I think it's really positive that residents in care homes and frontline workers are being prioritised alongside the NHS, because that goes to show how far we've come along and that we're not just being written off."

Most people questioned in Exmouth in this BBC Spotlight report too were positive, but not all.

Deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van Tam has appealed for people to "get on the train" to make sure the pandemic can be stopped as quickly as possible. Some government advisers say they understand the concern that some people may feel about the UK being the first country to introduce the vaccine, but say that the approval process has been as rigorous as for any other drug.
