More sewage spills at Exmouth

Red flag, no swimming (image courtesy: EDDC)

Red flags out again

Red flags have gone up on Exmouth beach again following more sewage leakages.

On Monday, East Devon District Council warned people not to go in the sea, just weeks after the town made headlines nationally after South West Water pipes ruptured near the seafront at Maer Lane.

Maer Road car park is currently closed to the public whilst the company's vehicles and tankers use it to try to rectify ongoing problems.

The firm says more than a hundred people are working shifts round-the-clock on what they say is a complex engineering problem.

But on Friday, a spill from a tank placed at the scene which was discharging sewage into an overland pipe caused more problem.

South West Water blames human error and says it has now put processes in place to stop a reoccurrence.

It has been some weeks since the initial problem led to 'no swimming' warnings being placed on the beach in the peak summer holiday period.

There is no date for when the issue will be fixed.
