This is always a busy week for the local ambulance service.
Last year during the week between Christmas and New Year, they took one and a half thousand emergency calls... and more than five thousand during the whole of December.
Staff want to stress that they're there for genuine emergencies and that there are other health services including NHS Direct, pharmacies and GPs' surgeries for less urgent cases.
