Man ordered to court over tortoises deaths

10 mysterious corpses found

A man is due to appear in court in relation to the deaths of several giant tortoises near Exeter. 

Gary Priddle, 56, of Grecian Way, Exeter, is facing charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

He is due to appear before Exeter Magistrates' on Thursday 30 May.

A total of 10 dead tortoises were by found police in Ashclyst Forest between December (2023) and March (2024) which sparked an investigation into their cause of death and disposal.

Aldabra tortoises are one of the largest species of tortoise in the world.

They can live for more than 150 years, with some having shells that reach more than a metre in length.
