Hotel plans lowered

The Corbyn Head is one of three sites in Torbay bought by the Singapore-based Fragrance Group

One floor of bedrooms has been cut from the proposed replacement for the seafront Corbyn Head Hotel, making the main building 2.9m lower than in the original planning application.

The change also means the number of bedroom is down by 23 from 175 to 152.

Car parking spaces have been increased from 94 to 101, working out at two for every three bedrooms.

The developer says that is below the one per room policy in the Local Plan, but would be enough with careful management.

Objections to the original plans put forward in October for the new hotel at Livermead included concerns over its height and the parking.

Documents with the planning application say the new 4-star hotel with a rooftop bar, spa and restaurant open to non-residents would create 120 jobs.

The current three-storey hotel with 45 bedrooms opposite Livermead Sands was created from a house dating back to the 1930s, which the developer says is no longer fit for modern use.

Consultation on the revised plans goes on until Wednesday, March 20.

The application would later be expected to go before Torbay Council’s development management committee for a decision.

The Corbyn Head is one of three sites in Torbay bought by the Singapore-based Fragrance Group.

Plans were put on show earlier this month for a new 5-star destination spa hotel with 248 bedrooms on the site of the Palace Hotel at Babbacombe, Torquay.

The four-star 141-bed hotel was bought and closed in 2017 ahead of redevelopment.

Planning permission was given in November to replace the Park Hotel at Paignton with a £14m 161-bed hotel creating 100 jobs.

Demolition work has started on the site overlooking Paignton Green.
