Historic monument damaged
Police are looking for a group of six people who entered a protected site with a metal detector and may have removed artifacts while causing damage to the surrounding area.
The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 28th at Berry Pomeroy Castle near Totnes.
Around ten patches of grass were found to have been lifted and placed back.
Officers are working closely with Historic England and English Heritage in their investigation.
The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 provides detailed protection for nationally important sites such as Berry Pomeroy Castle, and those found guilty of offenses under this act can receive a substantial fine, a term of imprisonment, or both.
