New seafront venue opens next week
Torbay’s latest new hotel opens its doors for the first time next week - with a major nod to the bay’s elegant past.
The £30million Ibis Styles on Paignton seafront is the latest venture from the Singapore-based Fragrance Group, which has also opened its Mercure Hotel next door last year.
Fragrance is also building the new Corbyn Head Hotel at Torquay, and was behind the five-star Palace Hotel project at Babbacombe until the plug was pulled on that in 2023.
The two new seafront hotels at Paignton signify a collective investment of £70million.
The new 121-bedroom hotel’s restaurant will be called Deller’s Cafe, the name of a much-loved cafe which stood on the same site more than 100 years ago.
There were two Deller’s Cafés in Paignton – one in Torbay Road and the so-called Summer Café on the sea front where the Ibis Styles is now.
It became the Casino pub, then later the Fiesta and The Lighthouse, before the building was knocked down to make way for the hotel.
The one in Torbay Road was opened in 1911, and was inexplicably knocked down in 1965 by Paignton Urban District Council to make way for a row of concrete shops with flats above.
The new hotel is the first UK Ibis Styles hotel to have a ‘dry spa’ with three beauty treatment rooms and a gym.
Jason Parry of Ibis Styles Paignton said: "As the first of its kind in the collection, our hotel represents a truly unique offering for Paignton - a fresh, vibrant and playful space where creativity meets comfort with a splash of fun.
“Standing shoulder to shoulder with our neighbour, the Mercure Paignton, this new hotel marks the latest milestone in our mission to put Paignton on the map as a premier UK holiday destination and contribute to the growth of its dynamic hospitality scene.
“With ibis Styles and Mercure leading the way, we are delighted to be spearheading a new era for this South Devon resort.”
