Crucial Devon sports day

WATCH: Semi-finals hopes for Chiefs and Torquay United

By the end of Saturday, two leading Devon sports teams will know what the finale of the season should look like.

Torquay United are still hoping for a return to the football league. After leading the National League for much of the year, injuries led to a dip in form in the critical final few weeks of the regular season.

Automatic promotion fell by the wayside. That place went to Sutton United. Now Notts County stand in Torquay's way of a place in the final next Saturday. If they get through, they'll play either Stockport or Hartlepool. That match will be settled on Sunday.

On Friday, United rewarded manager Gary Johnson with a contract extension. He brought the team up from National League South in 2019.

In rugby, Exeter Chiefs play the last regular game of the Premiership season when Sale come to Sandy Park. It's a battle for second place. If Sale win and the Chiefs don't bag a bonus point, both teams end the season on 78 points, but Sale will go through because they will have won one more match. Four tries or more, or losing by seven points or fewer sends the Chiefs through to the semi-finals - where the will play Sale again at Sandy Park.

If the don't get the bonus point, the Chiefs will have to travel to Greater Manchester - unless they top the table. They're currently three points behind table toppers Bristol Bears, but the Bears match against London Irish has been cancelled because of a covid outbreak at London Irish. A panel will decide how to allocate the points.
