Their mother was rescued from war-torn Ukraine
The Wildwood Trust is planning to bring two twin brown bear cubs to its sanctuary in Devon, offering them a permanent home.
The cubs were born after their mother was rescued from war-torn Ukraine, where she had been living in distressing conditions.
She was finally brought to safety in Belgium and unexpectedly gave birth to the twins, offering a symbol of hope amid turmoil.
To fund the relocation of the cubs and their care, Wildwood Trust is launching a fundraising campaign.
The average annual cost of caring for a bear at the sanctuary is approximately £70,000, covering expenses for food, medical care, and the creation of an appropriate living space.
The Trust’s new initiative highlights the ongoing challenges faced by wildlife displaced by conflict and the important role of sanctuaries in providing long-term care and rehabilitation for animals in need.
Mark Habben, Director of Zoo Operations at Wildwood Trust, said; “The fact these bears are alive today is nothing short of miraculous. Their mother was part of the mass exodus from Ukraine, transported in the back of a van to escape the shelling.
“Our friends in Belgium weren’t expecting these two vivacious cubs. Now, with growing appetites and a need for more space, it’s vital we give them the forever home they deserve.”
