Five goal thriller at SJP

Exeter thrash Accrington Stanley

Having lost to Cheltenham last week, Exeter needed a confidence boost in front of their home supporters.

And they got it, with five goals delighting fans, and goals from Demitri Mitchell, Josh Key, Sam Nombe, James Scott and Jay Stansfield. 

City dominated the game, and Accrington Stanley didn’t come close to scoring. Exeter dominated on and off the ball and showed character.

Before the goal-fest, a shot from Exeter wing back Mitchell was saved by Accrington keeper Lukas Jensen. He later broke the deadlock after a fabulous right-footed curler into the far post 36 minutes into the game. 

After having most of the chances in the first half, Exeter were pushed onto their back foot as Accrington put on a little pressure.

That dissipated after Exeter centre back and captain Will Aimson found Exeter's Josh Key extended the Grecian's lead.

Key’s goal proved a push to Exeter’s confidence taking it just five more minutes to register another goal. After a corner there was a scramble inside the box, but a heading effort had hit the crossbar but perfectly rebounded straight into Nombe’s feet who had a simple tap in to put away, which he did to make it three for the Grecians.

Exeter went more attacking after bringing midfielder Joe White and striker James Scott on. Scott was on the pitch for about a minute before getting on the score sheet. 

The final goal came from Stansfield. Left wing back Jack Sparkes used his body well to get past his man before playing the ball to Stansfield for his first goal under Exeter manager Gary Caldwell.

Exeter go into their next match hoping to keep this form going, when they take on Barnsley on Tuesday.
