Exeter City 11 Torquay United 0
Exeter City had fans reaching for the record books as they clocked up a memorable victory over Devon rivals Torquay United.
The Gulls fielded their youth team for the St Lukes Devon Bowl tie which was played behind closed doors at the Grecians’ Cliff Hill training ground.
And despite a lively start from both teams, the young Gulls were no match for the more experienced home side, who romped into a 5-0 lead by the interval and kept on notching the goals throughout the second half.
Theo Cutler grabbed six of the City goals, with the others going to Gabe Billington, Kieran Wilson, Tom Dean, Charlie Cummins and George Birch.
Football purists will argue over whether the Devon Bowl counts as a senior fixture for record purposes, but the 11-0 scoreline was some way off City’s best ever - a 14-0 win over Weymouth in the FA Cup in 1908. James Bell was a six-goal hero on that day.
However, Torquay’s worst defeats in senior matches to date were two 2-10 scorelines, against Fulham in 1931 and Luton in 1933.
City will travel to play Barnstaple Town in the quarter finals of the Devon Bowl in the new year.
