Chiefs pummel Pirates

Premiership Cup victory

Exeter Chiefs' westountry rivals Cornish Pirates went away from Sandy Park sore in the second round of the Premiership Cup. Exeter fans came to Sandy Park clearly excited after last week's astonishing 75-0 whipping of Bristol Bears.

But the first half left fans frustrated and demanding more.

Chiefs had an early set back after a pass was intercepted by Pirates scrum half Ruaridh Dawson who had an open space to run through and score the first try of the game. This was followed by a converted Chiefs' try when Josh Hodge caught a ball kicked by Ollie Devoto, passing it to Tom Wyatt who touched it down for the try.

Ross Vintcent extended the Chiefs’ lead but a Pirates penalty and then one from Will Trewin try saw the Pirates take a 12-13 lead at half time. The disappointment throughout the half was Exeter's handling errors in good positions costing valuable points.

After the break, a far more dominant display brought its reward. The Chiefs scored four tries, with three converted; the pick of which was full back Josh Hodge’s effort as he danced run past the Pirates' defensive line to slide over in the corner. In fact, the Chiefs didn’t mess about in the second half at all, with as Ben Hammersley, Vintcent, Wyatt adding to Hodge's try, and strong defensive play giving Exeter a deserved win.

Final score 38-13 to Exeter.

The Chiefs move onto match three of the competition as they travel to Jersey Reds.
